College Grocery Tips

As all of us who have been poor or a college student or both know, the best way to save money is to ditch the fast food and stick to the grocery store. Although it seems more time consuming, it is much cheaper (and healthier!) to cook at home. So this week I decided to see how much delicious, healthy & CHEAP food I could get at Publix in order to maximize my money. Below is what I was able to purchase with $100, hoping it will last me about 5 weeks. The fruit will last for less than that so I'll have to go restock it every 10 days or so. And the milk expires in 2 weeks so I'll have to restock on that too. But other than that I think I did pretty well!

MEAT
Frozen shrimp (8 servings) 8.99 = $1.12/serving
Frozen salmon (4 servings) 10.99 = $2.75/serving
Chicken breast (5 servings) 9.99 = $2.00/serving
Turkey slices (4 servings) 2.99 = $0.75/serving

FRUIT & VEGGIES
Strawberries (1 lb) $2.50
Bananas (8) $0.26 per banana
Apples (5) $0.85 per apple
Cucumbers (2) $0.75 each
Frozen mixed veggies $0.27 per serving
Bag of spinach $0.10 per serving

OTHER
Campbell's Soup (2) $1.33 per can
Eggs $1.09 per dozen
Carrots $1.69 per bag
Sushi $2.75 per serving
Sandwich pockets $0.50 per serving
Flax seed $1.69 per package
Pinto beans $1.19 a bag
Lentils $1.39 a bag
Apple Juice $2.25
Mixed Nuts $3.95 a bag
Brown Rice $1.93 a bag
Skim milk $2.25 per gallon
Kashi GoLean Crunch $3.79 a box
Feta cheese $4.99
Gum $1.00
Yogurt (10) $0.70 each

TOTAL $100.22

Total per week (assuming I can use it for 5 weeks) = $20

Hope this helps anyone who doesn't think they can shop cheap & healthy.
